1. Introduction to Songnisan Beopjusa Temple

Welcome to Songnisan Beopjusa Temple, a true cultural masterpiece nestled in the heart of Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea. Located inside Songnisan National Park, this sacred site offers a peaceful retreat into history, spirituality, and natural beauty.

A Heritage Spanning Over 1,400 Years
The name Beopjusa means “a place where Buddha’s teachings reside.” Master Uisin founded this magnificent temple in 553 AD during the reign of King Jinheung of Silla. Over the centuries, royalty sought refuge and spiritual energy here. King Gongmin of Goryeo visited the temple while returning from exile. King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, completed 100 days of prayer at Beopjusa before ascending the throne. King Sejo also stayed at the nearby Bokcheonam Hermitage to pray for healing from his skin disease.

Although a devastating fire destroyed most of the original 60 buildings during the 1592 Imjin War, Venerable Byeokam rebuilt the complex in 1624. In 2018, UNESCO officially recognized Beopjusa as a World Heritage Site under “Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries in Korea.”

National Treasures and Cultural Wonders
Beopjusa houses three prestigious National Treasures alongside dozens of registered heritage items:

Palsangjeon Pagoda (National Treasure No. 55): Korea’s only surviving five-story wooden pagoda. It preserves exquisite Joseon-era architecture.

Twin Lion Stone Lantern (National Treasure No. 5): A unique Silla-era sculpture featuring two sculpted lions holding a stone lantern.

Lotus-Shaped Stone Basin (National Treasure No. 64): A beautifully carved stone vessel that once held lotus flowers.

Golden Maitreya Statue: Standing 33 meters tall, this massive bronze statue coated in gold leaf commands the temple grounds.

Historic Artifacts: Visitors can also admire a huge iron pot that cooked rice for 3,000 monks, an ancient stone cistern, and the Seonheegung Shrine.

Beopjusa offers a popular Templestay program for international visitors. You can experience authentic monastic life through morning chanting, tea ceremonies with monks, and traditional meditation. Walking barefoot along the famous Seori-gil red clay path surrounded by pine trees adds a refreshing natural healing element to your visit.

2. How to Get to Songnisan Beopjusa Temple
   Reaching Beopjusa Temple is straightforward whether you travel by public transport or personal car from Seoul, Daejeon, or Cheongju.

By Express Bus
From Seoul: Head to Central City Bus Terminal (Express Bus Terminal Station) or East Seoul Bus Terminal. Board a direct intercity bus bound for Songnisan Terminal. The ride takes about 3 hours.

From Songnisan Terminal: Walk approximately 20 minutes along a flat, paved trail lined with craft shops and local restaurants to reach the temple entrance.

By Train and Local Bus
KTX Option: Take the KTX high-speed train to Osong Station or Daejeon Station.

Transfer: Take a local intercity bus directly to Songnisan Bus Terminal.

By Car
Set your GPS navigation to “Beopjusa Temple Parking Lot” (525 Beopjusa-ro, Songnisan-myeon, Boeun-gun). Ample parking is available near the entrance of Songnisan National Park.
