1. Introduction to Gochang Eupseong
Discover one of Korea’s best-preserved town fortresses at Gochang Eupseong.
Locals also call it Moyangseong. Builders raised the natural-stone walls around 1453 during the early Joseon period. The walls stretch 1,684 meters and stand 4 to 6 meters high.
Three main gates guard the east, west, and north sides. Defensive features include ongseong (curved outer walls) and chi (protruding bastions). A dry moat once added extra protection.
Inside the fortress you find restored government buildings. The dongheon (magistrate’s office) and gaeksa (guest house) show how officials once worked. Pine trees and walking paths create a peaceful mood.
Women once walked the walls three times while balancing a stone on their heads. This old custom, called dap-seong, aimed to bring health and good fortune.
Gochang Eupseong ranks among Korea’s finest eupseong. Unlike mountain fortresses that used steep peaks for defense, town fortresses enclosed local offices and homes. Korea has hundreds of such sites, yet few keep their original shape so well.

2. How to Get to Gochang Eupseong
Reach Gochang Eupseong easily by bus or car.
Take an intercity bus from Seoul Central City Terminal. The ride lasts about three to four hours and stops at Gochang Bus Terminal.
From the terminal walk about ten to fifteen minutes toward the fortress. Clear signs point the way along Moyangseong-ro.
Drivers follow the highway toward Gochang-eup. Free parking sits near the main entrance. The fortress stays open from early morning until late evening.
Use Naver Map or KakaoMap and search “고창읍성.” Local taxis also cover the short distance quickly.
Arrive in the morning for cooler air and fewer crowds on the wall path.
