A temple site refers to a temple site that was once in operation but is now closed and only traces remain.

Since Buddhism was the state religion from the Three Kingdoms period to the Goryeo Dynasty, there are many temple sites in Korea.

According to the Jogye Order Buddhist Cultural Heritage Research Institute, there are as many as 5,738 temple sites nationwide.

When looking at temple sites, we can see that humans have a finite lifespan, and that great monks were famous only at that time, and that they were called hosaiyupi in the history of human affairs, but now their traces have disappeared and are difficult to even mention. What good is it to look at them?

Located in Buknae-myeon, Yeoju-si, Gyeonggi-do, this temple site was founded during the reign of King Gyeongdeok, the 35th king of Unified Silla during the North-South States Period, and was designated as a historic site in 1993.

Godalsa Temple was first built during the Silla Dynasty and later grew into a large temple.
There are many stone cultural assets left here, and it is said that they were all made by a stonemason named Godal.
It is said that Godal devoted his soul to building the temple without knowing that his family would starve to death. After completing the temple, he shaved his head and became a monk. Later, he achieved enlightenment and became a great monk, and it is said that the temple was called Godalsa Temple.

Recent excavations have confirmed the site of the building, including the Geumdang Hall, and have allowed us to estimate the scale of the temple site to some extent.

I rode my bike along the Namhan River to get there.
The old temple site on the side of the mountain was quiet, and I couldn’t feel the splendor of the past.
However, I could feel the monk’s footsteps in the remaining stones and pillars.
On the way back, I could think about who the prosperity and decline of the country depended on.
