Hangae Folk Village is a clan village of the Seongsan Lee clan with a 600-year tradition located in Wolhang-myeon, Seongju-gun, the home of melons.

It was designated as the 6th nationally designated folk village in 2007.

The topography of the village is the best in Yeongnam with Yeongchusan Mountain (330m) to the north as the main mountain, facing southwest, and a back mountain and water formation, and it is a Banchon village from the Joseon Dynasty that produced 33 successful candidates in the civil service examination.

The village’s traditional hanok and the surrounding earthen stone walls blend well together, leading to a natural village route and blending well with the beautiful scenery, making it a village with high cultural heritage value.

The name of the village, ‘Hangae’, is said to have been given because there used to be a large stream or ferry here.

The terrain of the village is such that the mountain behind it, Yeongchusan Mountain (331.7m above sea level), stretches out to Cheongryongdeung and Baekryongdeung as if it were surrounding the village, and Baekcheon flows from west to east in front of the village, forming the best road in Yeongnam.

Hangae Village is a village that can represent the Dongseon Village in the Seongju area that maintains many of its traditions, and its 75 traditional houses are well-organized and well-placed.

There are 10 buildings designated as cultural properties of Gyeongsangbuk-do, most of which were built in the late 18th century to early 19th century.

Not only does the overall village structure show a traditional appearance according to feng shui, but the layout and floor plans of upper-class and commoner houses also reflect regional characteristics well.

In addition, each house has an inner house, a guest house, and an annex arranged according to the characteristics of the land, so the structure of the inner and outer spaces is diverse.

The furniture method is also a traditional furniture method, and the roof, main room, inner room, kitchen, and porch are almost completely preserved in their original form.

As urbanization progresses, traditional villages are disappearing.

The characteristics of Korean houses include thatched-roof houses and tile-roofed houses. This Hangae Village is a typical village of the rich, consisting of tile-roofed houses.

Their dream is to work in the central government and then return to their hometown to teach children when they grow old.

In this sense, it would be a desirable thing to return to the place where they were born, where the air is good, the water is clean, and the people are kind, and spend the rest of their lives there.

The earthen stone walls of Hangae Village are still the same as they were in the past.

In the fall, there is a certain charm to walking down a quiet road while stepping on fallen leaves.

Some houses also offer guesthouses.
