You will find 193 types of rare trees here. These include the silver magnolia and hackberry trees. However, the Camellia trees are the real stars.
Over 3,000 Camellia trees turn the island into a “Sea of Flowers.” People often call it the “Camellia Island.” These red flowers start blooming in October. They create a beautiful contrast against the green leaves in winter. The flowers reach full bloom in mid-March. This makes Odongdo a perfect winter and spring destination.
2. How to Get to Yeosu Odongdo Island
Getting to Odongdo is part of the fun. The island connects to the mainland by a long breakwater path. You cannot drive your private car onto the island.
- By Train: Take the KTX to Yeosu Expo Station. The island entrance is a 15-minute walk from the station.
- The Dongbaek Train: This cute train runs from the entrance to the island center. It saves you energy and offers a nice view.
- By Sea: You can take a motorboat or a cruise ship near the entrance. This gives you a thrilling view of the cliffs from the water.
- On Foot: Many visitors simply walk along the mural-filled breakwater. It takes about 15 minutes and offers fresh sea breezes.
3. The Scenery of Yeosu Odongdo Island
Nature lovers will adore the rocky coastlines here. The waves have carved amazing shapes into the cliffs over time. You can explore famous rock formations like the Conch Rock and the Folding Screen Rock. Do not miss the Dragon Cave and the Elephant Rock.
Walk to the southern tip of the island. You will find the white Odongdo Lighthouse there. Climb to the top for a panoramic view of the South Sea.
Bamboo tunnels also crisscross the forest. These green tunnels act as perfect photo spots. The contrast between the red camellias, green bamboo, and blue ocean creates unforgettable scenery.
