Magoksa Temple, located on the eastern hillside of Taehwasan Mountain in Unam-ri, Sagok-myeon, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do, is the headquarters of the 6th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.

As can be seen from its nickname, ‘Spring Magok,’ Taehwasan Mountain, where Magoksa Temple is located, is full of life in the spring sunshine and is blessed with the beauty of its trees and spring flowers.

According to the records of the Magoksa Historic Site Establishment Plan, ‘Magoksa is said to have been founded in 640 (41st year of King Mu of Baekje) by the great monk Jajang Yulsa of Silla. It is said that in 1172 during the reign of King Myeongjong of Goryeo, it was rebuilt by State Preceptor Bojo and rebuilt by Master Beomil.

It is said that State Preceptor Doseon rebuilt it again and Master Gaksun repaired it.

During the Joseon Dynasty, King Sejo visited this temple and bestowed the royal title ‘Yeongsanjeon’.

At the time of its founding by the great monk Jajang Yulsa of Silla, it was a large temple with about 30 rooms, but Magoksa Temple currently consists of buildings such as Daeungbojeon (Treasure No. 801), Daegwangbojeon (Treasure No. 802), Yeongsanjeon (Treasure No. 800), Sacheonwangmun, and Haetalmun (Gate of Liberation). In addition, the sacred treasures of the temple include a five-story stone pagoda (Treasure No. 799), a Buddhist temple bell (Local Tangible Cultural Property No. 62), a hanging Buddhist painting, a wooden tablet, a lotus that King Sejo rode, a bronze incense burner (Local Tangible Cultural Property No. 20), and the 6th volume of the Gamsa-geumni Myobeop Yeonhwa-gyeong (Treasure No. 270) and the 1st volume of the Gamsa-eunni Myobeop Yeonhwa-gyeong (Treasure No. 269) are preserved.

Entering Magoksa Temple, there is a place with a wall to the left between the Haetalmun and the Cheonwangmun, and there is an old building there, which is called Yeongsanjeon.

In front of it is a pavilion called Heungseongru, and next to it is a small traditional building in the shape of the letter ㄷ. This is Taehwaseonwon.

Taehwaseonwon does not have a very long tradition, but it is a place where monks come to practice every year during the Angeol period.
