1 Introduction to Gongsanseong Fortress.

Summary
Gongju Gongsanseong is a royal castle of Baekje Ungjin period located in Sanseong-dong, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do. Therefore, it was called Ungjinseong at that time.
The castle wall is currently made of earthen wall on the east side and stone wall on the rest. Accordingly, it is known that it was built as an earthen castle during Baekje and rebuilt as a stone castle during Joseon period.
It was a royal castle during Ungjin period, a northern castle during Sabi period, and a administrative center of Ungcheonju during Unified Silla.
When the Chungcheong Gamyeong (監營) was moved from Chungju to Gongju after the Imjin War, the Gamyeong was located within the castle, and King Injo fled here to escape the rebellion of Yi Gwal.

Significance and Evaluation
As it was the capital city of Baekje during the Ungjin period, it is an important clue to understanding the structure of Baekje’s capital city during the Ungjin period.

It is also of great help in understanding the structure of the capital city during the Hanseong period and the Sabi period and the process of change in Baekje’s capital city.

Since local government was centered around Gongsanseong during the Unified Silla period and the Joseon period, it is also a crucial clue to understanding the structure and characteristics of the administrative city.
