The Geochang Jang clan built Geonjeong Pavilion in 1905. They erected it to commemorate the achievements of Jang Dumin, a descendant of the clan’s founder, Jang Jonghaeng.
- A Hero’s Legacy: During the Goryeo Dynasty, Jang Dumin earned great merit. He commanded troops and successfully drove out the Red Turban invaders who had occupied the capital, Gaegyeong. King Gongmin honored his military service by naming him the Lord of Arim (아림군).
- The Name’s Origin: The pavilion’s name, Geonjeong, reflects the clan’s history. They named it after Geonju (建州) in China, the place where their family lineage originated.
- A Place of Inspiration: Although historically a strategic military and geographic point.
- Geonjeong is now known as the pinnacle of Geochang’s scenic beauty. The blend of the classic pavilion, clear flowing water, and lush surrounding forests stops poets and artists in their tracks.
2. 🏞️ The Scenery of Geochang Geonjeong
Geonjeong Pavilion boasts a picturesque setting that inspired many classical writers.
- Architectural Harmony: The pavilion itself is a beautiful two-story structure, three bays wide and two bays deep.
- Turtle Rock Foundation: Builders cleverly constructed the pavilion on the back of a large Turtle Rock (거북바위). This rock appears to be crawling out of the clear waters of the Yeongcheon Stream toward Gyeoryeolsanseong Fortress.
- A Feast for the Senses: The pavilion stands where the valley of Geonheungsan Mountain meets the clear waters of the Yeongcheon Stream. The surrounding trees, especially the cherry blossoms in spring, harmonize with the flowing water, creating a truly spectacular view. Visitors often feel compelled to sit, enjoy a cup of makgeolli, and compose poetry.
