Beopjusa(Temple) with a giant Buddha statue

1 Introduction to Beopjusa Temple.

Beopjusa Temple, which means “where the Buddha’s law resides,” is located at the foot of Mt. Sokri. It was founded by Uisinjosa in the 14th year of King Jinheung’s reign (553 AD) and rebuilt by King Seongdeok and King Hyegong. It began to grow into a large temple at this time.

When the Red Turbans invaded Goryeo, King Gongmin fled to Andong and stopped by on his way back to the palace. King Taejo of Joseon prayed for 100 days before ascending to the throne, and King Sejo, who was ill, prayed for three days at Bokcheonam.

By the mid-Joseon period, it had grown to be a large temple with over 60 buildings and 70 hermitages, but due to the Imjin War, almost all of the temple buildings were burned down. It was rebuilt again by Monk Byeogam in 1624, the 2nd year of King Injo’s reign. It has undergone several repairs since then, and has remained as it is today.

The old layout of Beopjusa Temple was centered around Daeungbojeon Hall, with the Avatamsaka faith axis and the Maitreya faith axis centered around Yonghwabojeon Hall intersecting at right angles to Palsangjeon Hall. However, in 1990, when the 33-meter-tall bronze Maitreya Buddha was built, the layout was broken.

Within the temple grounds, there are about 10 buildings including Yonghwajeon Hall, Wontongbojeon Hall, Myeongbujeon Hall, Neunginjeon Hall, Josagak Hall, Jinyeonggak Hall, and Samseonggak Hall, as well as the Jongmuso Office.

More than half of the designated cultural properties of Boeun are located in the area around Beopjusa Temple, including the Seonhuigung Wonjang, which houses the memorial tablet of Crown Prince Sado’s mother, Lady Yeongbin Lee, Neunginjeon Hall, which houses the 16 Arhats, the Heungyeon Bosal statue that burned its own body and made an offering to Buddha, and stone and iron pots that can easily hold 80 sacks of rice.

Beopjusa Temple is a place where the Maitreya belief has been passed down for over a thousand years, and it conducts temple stays so that you can experience basic Buddhist culture such as prayer and Buddhist practice.
