1 Introduction to Gangwon Gamyeong.

Gangwon Gamyeong was the center of local administration in Gangwon-do during the Joseon Dynasty, overseeing the 26 bu, mok, gun, and hyeon. It was established in 1395 (the 4th year of King Taejo’s reign) and carried out the administrative affairs of Gangwon-do for 500 years until the Gamyeong was abolished in 1895 (the 32nd year of King Gojong’s reign) when the 8-do system was abolished and the 23-bu system was implemented.

Gamyeong is a local government office where the governor resided.

Gyeonggi-do Gamyeong was located outside Donuimun in Hanyang, Chungcheong-do in Chungju (moved to Gongju in the 35th year of King Seonjo’s reign), Gyeongsang-do in Sangju (moved to Dalseong in the 29th year of King Seonjo’s reign), Jeonju in Jeolla-do, Haeju in Hwanghae-do, Wonju in Gangwon-do, Hamheung in Hamgyeong-do, and Pyeongyang in Pyeongan-do.

Currently, the only place where the central building of the Gamyeong, Seonhwadang, remains is Gangwon Gamyeong in Wonju.

Gangwon Gamyeong, designated as National Historic Site No. 439, was restored in 2018.
A total of 12 wooden buildings are located within the restored historic site. Among them, Seonhwadang is a nationally designated cultural property, and Pojeongru is a tangible cultural property of Gangwon-do.
